The Krugerrand is a South African gold coin, first minted in 1967 by the South African Mint to help market South African gold. By 1980, the Krugerrand accounted for 90% of the global gold coin market. The name āKrugerrandā is a compound of āKruger,ā the 5th President of the South African Republic (Paul Kruger), Kruger which the name āKrugerrandā is a compound of together with the word ārand,ā the South African unit of currency.āÆĀ
The obverse of the coin depicts the effigy of Paul Kruger, struck from the original die used in 1892 for the Kruger half-crown coin.āÆāÆĀ
The reverse depicts a prancing springbok, a national symbol. This was designed and engraved by Coert Steynberg, a famous South African sculptor. In 1980, the fractional Krugerrands (1/2oz, 1/4oz and 1/10oz) were added to the Krugerrand collection, making the coin affordable to a broader audience.āÆĀ
